Your First Appointment at Beamsville Smiles: What to Expect

Starting with a new dentist for the first time can feel a little daunting — even for people who've been going to the dentist for years. New faces, new office, new routines. If you're a new patient at Beamsville Smiles, we want you to feel informed and at ease from the moment you book. Here's a clear, step-by-step look at what your first visit with us will involve.

Before You Arrive

The more we know going in, the more we can tailor your visit. Here's how to prepare before your first appointment:

  • Download and complete your new patient forms. These are available on our Patients page. Completing them in advance saves time at the office and ensures your dental and medical history is on file before your appointment.
  • Bring your insurance information. Bring your insurance card or the name of your provider so our front desk can verify your coverage before any treatment begins.
  • List your current medications. Certain medications can affect oral health, and we'll want a complete and up-to-date list during your exam.
  • Let us know if you have dental anxiety. If you're nervous about dental visits, please mention it when you book — or let us know when you arrive. Our team has extensive experience working with anxious patients, and we'll take every step to make your visit as comfortable as possible.

When You Arrive

Our front desk team will greet you and take care of any remaining paperwork. We always recommend arriving a few minutes early to get settled — you'll be brought through to the treatment room as soon as we're ready for you. Our waiting area is calm and comfortable, and you're welcome to ask any questions before the appointment begins.

Step 1: A Thorough Medical & Dental History Review

Your first appointment begins with a conversation. Your dentist will take time to review your completed health forms, understand your dental history, and ask about any specific concerns, sensitivities, or goals you have for your oral health. This is your opportunity to share anything that might be relevant — from past dental procedures to current symptoms or anxieties.

Step 2: The Comprehensive Oral Examination

Next, your dentist will conduct a thorough exam of your teeth, gums, jaw, and soft tissues. This includes:

  • Checking each tooth for signs of decay, wear, or damage
  • Assessing your gum health and measuring pocket depths around teeth
  • Evaluating your bite and jaw function
  • Examining the soft tissues of your mouth, cheeks, and tongue for any abnormalities
  • An oral cancer screening — a routine and important component of every comprehensive exam

Step 3: Digital X-Rays

Unless you have recent X-rays from a previous dentist (which we're happy to accept via our X-Ray Release Form), we'll take digital X-rays at your first visit. These give us a precise picture of what's happening below the gumline — areas invisible to the naked eye, where early cavities and bone loss can hide.

Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays and produce high-resolution images instantly. Your dentist can walk you through them on-screen during your appointment and explain exactly what they show.

Step 4: Professional Cleaning

In most cases, your first appointment will include a professional cleaning performed by one of our registered dental hygienists. They'll:

  1. Remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surfaces of your teeth and along the gumline
  2. Clean between teeth and in any areas your toothbrush may have missed
  3. Polish your teeth, leaving them feeling smooth and fresh
  4. Provide personalized brushing and flossing recommendations based on what they observe

If your gums show signs of disease or require more focused attention, your hygienist will discuss next steps and recommend an appropriate care plan.

Step 5: Your Personalized Treatment Plan

After your examination and cleaning, your dentist will sit down with you to review their findings and walk you through any recommended treatment. Our philosophy is transparency — we'll explain exactly what we found, what we recommend, and why. We'll outline your options clearly, discuss costs and insurance coverage upfront, and work around your schedule and priorities.

"There's no pressure to commit to anything on the spot. We want you to feel informed, comfortable, and confident about every decision you make about your oral health."

Before You Leave

Before you head out, we'll schedule your next appointment — typically a cleaning and checkup in six months, or sooner if treatment was recommended. You'll leave with a clear picture of your current oral health, a roadmap for what's ahead, and the knowledge that you're in good hands.

We look forward to meeting you and building a relationship that supports your smile for years to come.
